What is Hardboard?

Hardboard — also known as high-density fiberboard (HDF) — is an engineered wood panel product manufactured by compressing wood fibers at extremely high temperatures and pressures. The result is a dense, strong, and smooth-surfaced panel that serves as a versatile building material across dozens of industries.

The most common type is Hardboard (S1S), which stands for "Smooth One Side." This means one face of the panel is perfectly smooth and ready for painting, laminating, or direct use, while the reverse side features a characteristic mesh texture from the manufacturing screen.

Hardboard is manufactured using the wet process, where wood chips are broken down into fibers, mixed with water, and formed into mats that are then hot-pressed. The natural lignin in the wood acts as a binding agent, meaning standard hardboard contains no added formaldehyde resins — making it an environmentally responsible choice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hardboard

What is hardboard?
Hardboard (also known as high-density fiberboard or HDF) is a type of engineered wood panel made from wood fibers compressed under high heat and pressure. It is characterized by its smooth surface, high density (900–1050 kg/m³), and excellent dimensional stability.
What is the difference between hardboard and MDF?
While both are fiberboard products, hardboard is denser (900–1050 kg/m³ vs. 600–800 kg/m³ for MDF) and thinner (typically 2.5–6 mm). Hardboard is manufactured using the wet process, giving it a characteristic mesh-textured back.
What thicknesses are available?
BAYOU supplies standard hardboard in thicknesses of 2.2 mm, 2.5 mm, 2.8 mm, 3.2 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 6.0 mm.
What standard does BAYOU hardboard comply with?
All BAYOU hardboard panels comply with EN 622-2, the European standard for hardboard.
What are the common uses of standard hardboard?
Standard hardboard is widely used for furniture backing, door skins, flooring underlayment, packaging, automotive interior panels, construction site hoarding, retail fixtures, and DIY/craft projects.
Can I order custom sizes?
Yes. While our standard panel sizes include 1220×1830 mm, 1220×2440 mm, 1220×2750 mm, 1220×3050 mm, and 1700×2750 mm, we also offer cut-to-size services on request for bulk orders.
What shipping terms does BAYOU offer?
BAYOU offers flexible international shipping under EXW (Ex Works), FOB (Free On Board), and CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) terms.
